Joao Carlos Pina

CO-FOUNDER

As a mechanical engineer with an abiding passion for Formula 1, Joao Carlos Pina – or JC as he’s known – balances his know-how with a precise approach to sales. Over the past 30 years with Aerotechnic he has developed his acumen and skills to help build an unequalled business in the international aircraft parts and services business.

He met his co-founder, Jean-Pierre, in 1994 when they identified a massive gap in the African aircrafts market. From a container on the tarmac at Cape Town International airport, they built a business that now competes on the global stage, and one that works with a strong and connected regional ethic.

Today, Aerotechnic has a worldwide network of offices and an enviable client list that includes some of the biggest regional and commercial airlines.

While he would baulk at being given too much credit for the company’s success, it is evident when engaging with JC that he steers with a steady and well-practised hand. He brings extensive mechanical engineering know-how to bear when helping and supporting the sales team in their negotiations for new contracts or projects. He understands what customers need to know and, because he also networks with industry leaders all over the world, he ensures the business is ahead of technological advances and legislative changes.

As a fan of precision and detail, he’s the man ensuring that Aerotechnic upholds its quality assurances. In 2002, he implemented the processes involved in securing both the ‘ISO9001’ and ‘FAA AC00-56’ accreditations, which verify that Aerotechnic is a factory-authorised and quality distributor and supplier of aviation equipment. JC has also been instrumental in developing the software system that gives not only its customers but also everyone within Aerotechnic the ability to track and monitor every stage of a product’s development and delivery. “It may not be a Formula 1 pit-stop operation,” he says, “but we can, and do, pride ourselves on the level of detail we provide, on our high-quality service and products, and on our fast turnarounds.”

As a director of the business, JC operates an open-door policy with his colleagues. As a self-confessed introvert, he contradicts this as he travels about the globe opening doors for the business through his self-appointed networking remit. Never happy sitting around doing nothing, JC is a busy man and is proud of his customer relationships, and his client projects such as the establishment of a client’s wheel and brake workshop. “In the past, F1 drivers were often mechanical engineers because they needed to know how the car worked on every level”, he says. This mandate comes through in JC’s approach to his work and certainly his love of precision, detail and quality would seem to mirror the industry he venerates.

JC lives in Paarl, has two grown-up sons, and is engaged to be married, next year, to his second wife.

Jean-Pierre Guyeu

CO-FOUNDER

Amidst all the noise, Jean-Pierre Guyeu embraces the essence of the art of living in all he does.  He brings a centred, focused serenity to a frantic business and imparts his vision with conviction and confidence.  This approach has paid off because after 30 years in business, as a co-founder of Aerotechnic, Jean-Pierre is always creating new channels and new markets, but he does so with a calm inner knowing that the business will be even more successful in the years to come.

JP as he’s known to his colleagues – met his co-founder, Joao Carlos Pina (JC) in 1994 when they identified a gap in the African supply chain aircrafts market.  As fellow mechanical engineers working in the airline business, JP and JC started their business in a 40-foot container on the tarmac at Cape Town International airport.

From there, they quickly built a business that now competes on the global stage, and one that works with a strong and connected regional ethic.  Today, and after three decades at the top of their game, Aerotechnic has a worldwide network of offices and an enviable client list that boasts some of the biggest regional and commercial airlines.

JP keeps his long-term vision in mind as he navigates new advances for Aerotechnic and adopts a keen ‘mind over matter’ approach.  Knowing that he can’t do this alone, one of his key priorities is to help ignite the light in others so that they may shine brighter as they achieve and derive more from their daily work.  He believes fervently in empowering people, and he loves to connect people as he charts new territories. As he guides and directs, he acts as a ballast to keep the ship stable and ensure everything’s running smoothly.  He also weaves his magic in identifying people outside the business for the company’s plans, partnerships and acquisitions.

A Frenchman, born in Toulouse, JP was trained and gained experience as a mechanical engineer before he studied business management.  Another key element in his skills-base is his ability for self-reflection and self-assessment and this is something that he is turning into yet another bespoke software programme for Aerotechnic.  “We are currently testing this in-house and plan to go live with it in the next few months”, he explains. “It will help people assess/reflect on themselves and it will feed into our quality management system, and this exemplifies how we believe in our ability to always improve.”

JP talks enthusiastically about the ‘flow of energies’, and meditation and he shares his knowledge with his colleagues in a bid to help them realise that stress is only a big thing if you choose to hold onto it.  He’s a walking example of a man who achieves a lot without undue stress.  So, while some of his colleagues may, in the past, have exclaimed “OMW’ to JP’s suggestions, they’re increasingly turning that into a vibration that resonates with the right rhythm in business, and this makes a whole lot more sense than beating a great big stress drum.
